Do you know that sometime, sometimes and some time are used differently? What is the difference between those words? In this article, we are going to take a look at what makes them different and how to use them correctly.
1. Sometime as an Adverb
When we use sometime as an adverb, it refers to an unspecified point in time. Consider the following example;
I’ll get around to finishing that book sometime.
In the sentence above, we are talking about when the book will be finished (at some point in time). We are not talking about how long it will take to finish the book. Sometime as an adverb can also be replaced with someday or at some point, as in I’ll get around to finishing that book someday/at some point.
2. Sometime as an Adjective
When we use sometime as an adjective, it means ‘former’. Consider the following example;
Albert, a sometime cab driver, now flies airplane for a living.
In the sentence above, ‘a sometime cab driver’ means ‘a former cab driver’. It means that Albert used to be a cab driver, but not anymore now. However, some people use ‘sometime’ to refer to ‘occasional’ eventough it is not accepted by everybody. If you’re not sure about this, it’s better to avoid ambiguity and use a more specific terms.
3. Some Time
‘Some time’ is two words and refers to a span of time. It often means ‘a long time’.
For some time, humans have known that the world is round.
It will take some time to finish this project today.
In those examples above, ‘some time’ refers to a span of time and can also be replaced with ‘a long time’.
4. Sometimes
‘Sometimes’ is a one-word adverb which means ‘occasionally’. Take a look at these examples.
Sometimes I just don’t understand what that man is saying.
Everybody hurts sometimes.
i like to be on my own sometimes.
