The Differences between Miss, Mrs, and Ms.

Ditulis oleh: Administrator, 06-01-2021

We often address someone with a certain title such as Miss, Mrs, or Mr. It’s important to know the differences between those titles and how to use them correctly to avoid someone being offended with the way we address them. However, if someone tells you that they prefer a particular title, you should use it to address them.

How do you use “Miss”?

“Miss,” is a title of respect for an unmarried woman when it is attached to a name. We can use this title simply for a term address as in “Excuse me, Miss. You dropped your change purse.”, combine it with a surname as in “Miss Edwards is the new nursery school teacher.”, or something she represents as in “Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters is Miss Universe 2017.”

How do you use “Mrs.”?

“Mrs.” is a title of respect for a married or widowed woman. It appears with names and characteristics, for example, Mrs Donald Belmont. Back then, the title includes her husband’s name rather than her own. However, this practice is less common nowadays.

At work, when addressing married women, and when speaking to women in a position of authority, use “Mrs.” along with the married female’s last name. For example; Mrs. Jones is an amazing electrical engineer.

What about “Ms”?

“Ms” doesn’t indicate a woman’s marital status. So if you don’t know whether someone is married or not, you can use this title. Both “Miss” and “Ms.” apply to women who are unmarried or whose marital status is unknown. Which title to use depends on that women’s preference.
