Do you know what part of speech is? Well, every word is a part of speech. It refers to the role a word plays in a sentence. There are 8 parts of speech in English, and they work together to build a grammarly correct sentence. Each part of the speech is going to be elaborated on below.

1. Nouns

A noun is a person, place, concept, or object. Basically, anything that’s a “thing” is a noun. ‘Cleopatra’, ‘New York’ or ‘achievement’ are all nouns.

It falls into two categories; common nouns and proper nouns. Common nouns are general names for things, like planet and game show. Meanwhile, proper nouns are specific names for individual things, like Jupiter and Victor Hugo.

2. Pronouns

Pronouns are words we use to substitute a specific nouns that the readers or listeners understand which nouns we are referring to.

We might say “Jennifer was supposed to be here at eight,” then follow it with “she’s always late; next time I’ll tell her to be here a half-hour earlier.” She and her are called pronouns. Instead of using ‘Jennifer’ three times, we can substitute it with ‘she’ and ’her’ to make a more natural and efficient sentence.

3. Adjectives

Adjectives are words that describe nouns. Words such as funny, beautiful, suspenseful, and magnificent are examples of adjectives.

An adjective can go right before the noun it’s describing (I have a black dog), and they can be at the end of a sentence (my dog is black).

4. Verbs

Words such as ‘run’, ‘eat’ and ‘complete’ are examples of verbs. Verbs are words that describe a specific action. Not all verbs refer to literal actions, though. There are verbs that refer to states of being or feeling much as to love and to be. These are called non-action or stative verbs. Conversely, the verbs that do refer to literal actions are known as action verbs.

5. Adverbs

An adverb is a word that describes an adjective, a verb, or another adverb. Try to take a look at the following example:

She spoke kindly to the visitors. The word ‘kindly’ describe how she spoke (verb) to the visitors.

        Here’s another example:

A cheetah is always faster than a lion. Always is describing how frequently a cheetah is faster (adjective) than a lion.

6. Prepositions

Prepositions are used to show the relationship between words in sentences. Here’s an example: "I left my bike leaning against the garage". In this sentence, ‘against’ is the preposition because it tells us where I left my bike.

7. Conjunctions

We use conjunctions to create complex sentences and to link multiple ideas in an effective way. Words like ‘and’, ‘but’, ‘nor’ and ‘or’ are some examples of conjunctions.

Take a look at this sentence: "I like marinara sauce. I like alfredo sauce. I don’t like puttanesca sauce."

The sentence above is correct, but we can make it into one simple sentence using conjunctions as follows: "I like marinara sauce and alfredo sauce, but I don’t like puttanesca sauce."

8. Articles

Articles are words like ‘a’, ‘an’ and ‘the’. An apple. A haunted house. The black swan. There are two category of articles; definite articles and indefinite articles. A definite article describes one specific noun, like the and this. For example; Did you bring the basket? By using the word ‘the’, the person whom we talk to has a clear picture of which basket we are talking about. The meaning would be different when we say ‘Did you bring a basket?’.
