A list of Fruit-based Idioms You Should Know!

           Idioms are commonly used in everyday language to express a particular meaning. Since the meaning of one idiom doesn’t relate to the literal meaning of its words, we often have difficulties understanding what is the actual meaning of the idiom. Surprisingly, English uses many kinds of fruit to build idiom. Here is several idioms about fruit that you need to know so you won’t get lost in a conversation. 1. go bananas

Meaning: to become angry, crazy or silly

Example: He lost his job and just went bananas.

2. the apple of one’s eye

Meaning: a person or thing that is loved more than any other

Example: She is the apple of her father’s eye.

3. apples and oranges

Meaning: a situation in which two people or things are completely different from each other

Example: They are both great, but you can’t compare apples and oranges.

4. lemon

Meaning: a thing that is useless because it does not work as it should.

Example: The car that I bought is a lemon.

5. not give a fig

Meaning: not to care at all about something; to think that something is not important

Example: You can do what you want. I don’t give a fig.

6. a bite at the cherry

Meaning: an opportunity to do something

Example: We’ve lost that contract and probably won’t get another bite at the cherry.

7. a plum job

Meaning: very good job

Example: He is currently looking for a plum job in New York City.
