Throughout your English learning, you have probably encountered these 3 words frequently; the, a, and an. As foreign learners, we often get confused about when to use “a dog” and “the dog”. This leads to the question, what are those? And when to use that in a sentence?

Those three words are called “articles”. Basically, the articles are divided into definite and indefinite articles. They consolidate with a noun to indicate the type of reference made by the noun.

●      The definite article is the

●      The indefinite article is a and an.

The Indefinite article “a or an”

We use articles “a” or “an” when talking about things or people without specifying who or what we are talking about. For example:

●      I saw a thief last night.

●      Do you have a pencil?

●      I had an apple for breakfast this morning.

Furthermore, articles “A” and “An” are also distinguished by their use. Article “A” is used for singular countable nouns (a person, animal, or things) that are not specific. In a sentence, we do not use the article “A” before uncountable or plural nouns. Also, the article “A” is used for a noun that starts with a consonant sound (b, c, d, f, etc), For example:

●      A singer

●      A bee

●      A knife

On the other hand, the article “An” is used for a noun that starts with a vowel sound (a, i, u, e, o). As well as the article “Aa”, and article “An” is also used for singular countable nouns that aren’t specific and we do not use the article “An” for uncountable or plural nouns. For example:

●      An actress

●      An orange

●      An Owl

However, there are things to remember in writing articles "A" or "An" in a sentence. There are some words that, even though they start with a consonant, they still use "An" instead of "A," and vice versa. For example, the word “honor”. When we pronounced the word “honor”, it sounds more like a vowel, “/ˈänər/” so it uses the article "An" instead of "A." Another example is the word “hour”. Its use in a sentence could be as follows "It's been an hour since he left."

The same goes for the word “unit”. Even though it starts with the vowel “U”, how to read the word “unit” sounds like it starts with a consonant “Y” in English, “/ˈyo͞onət/”. Hence, when writing units, it tends to use “A” to be “A unit” rather than “An unit.”

The definite article “The”

In contrast with the articles “A” or “an”, article “The” is used for all nouns. It does not matter whether the nouns are singular or plural, countable or uncountable. Moreover, The article “The” is used for describing something or someone that is specific. For example,

●      The sun

●      The grapes

●      The air

●      The sky

Article “The” can be used:

●      To mention something that is certain to exist.

For example, “The sun shines so brightly today.”

●      To describe a person or object specifically.

For example, "Have you seen the woman with a red hoodie?"

●      To describe a particular group of people.

For example, "We should help the poor to get back from poverty."

That's how to use the article "A", "An", and "The" in English. Happy Learning!
