Once a year in Gloucester, a group of adults will run down a hill in pursuit of a large round of cheese, competing to see who can reach the finish line first and obtain the ultimate prize: said wheel of cheese. This annual event is known as Cheese Rolling, or more specifically The Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake. Initially a traditional event only held by the locals, the event has gone global, with many participants from all around the world.

             From the top of a very steep hill, a 3-4 kilograms round of Double Gloucester cheese is sent rolling down. A second later, participants start running down the hill, racing after the cheese. The first person reach the finish line at the end of the 180 meters long downward slope wins both the race and the cheese.

             As silly as this all sounds, Cheese Rolling is actually a dangerous sport! The rolling cheese can easily reach high speeds, and with its weight, is able to knock over and injure a spectator. Many injuries have been reported throughout the years. In fact, the champion of 2023’s Cheese Rolling only won by reaching the finish line while she was unconscious. Still, risks like these are exactly what daredevils crave, and as a result Cheese Rolling is still a popular tourist activity to this day.
