Have you ever heard on how an American and a British saying the word class differently? As a non-native speaker, we might be confused when we heard it for the first time. We must be wondering which one is using the correct English. Generally, no one version is correct nor wrong. They are just simply different, and those differences are completely fine. Therefore, let us take a look at some differences between American and British English.

First of all, the spelling may be different. There are hundreds of minor spelling differences between American and British English. Most words which end with –our are spelled without the u in British English. The words, such as humour and behaviour (in American), are spelled humor and behavior in British. So, they often omit the u in British English. American would spell center, whereas British would spell centre. Also, many British English verbs ending in –ise are spelled with –ize in American English. For example, realise (British English) and realize (American English).

Anofher one is the pronunciation. In this aspect, American and British English sound noticeably different. The most obvious differences is the way the letter r is pronounced. In British English, when r comes after a vowel in the same syllable, as in car, perhaps, and there, the letter r is not pronounced. Differ from American English, the letter r is pronounced. They also spell the letter a differently. British would say the word class as /klɑ:s/. However, the American would say /klᴂs/.

Lastly, the vocabulary may also be distinct. This is the most noticeable difference between American and British English. There are so many everyday words that are different between the two Englishes. For instance, Americans call the front part of the car as the hood, meanwhile British people call it bonnet. The Americans wear sweater when the temperature is dropping, whereas Brits wear jumper. Both sweater and jumper are the same thing. New Yorkers live in apartments and Londoners live in flats.

As you can see, there are some differences between American and British English in the aspect of spelling, pronunciation, and vocabulary. Although they are different, it must not be a concern or worse, a problem for us. Both Englishes are fine and no one is above the other. As I told you before, they are simply different. Differences are not a bad thing, instead they make the world more beautiful and colourful.
